Song-A-Day: February 17

February 17 is the birthday of the best Basketball player the world’s ever seen in Michael Jordan, and our Song-A-Day is barely going to reflect that. The title of the track is “The Michael Jordan of Drunk Driving”, which is a short song by Andrew Jackson Jihad which describes said character’s ‘last game’ being played tonight in the typically insane style of the artist. This is one of my favorite songs by Andrew Jackson Jihad though because it’s length keeps it simple so that the point gets made but not overdone, listen below

The Michael Jordan of Drunk Driving played his final game tonight
Emburdened by his loneliness, he wanted to feel alive
His laziness built the pyramids, and his solitude was a knife
The Michael Jordan of Drunk Driving played his final game tonight

Song-A-Day: February 15

This is the easiest one done yet, today is the birthday of Conor Oberst, a musician beloved by many in our radio station. Oberst has remained active post-Bright Eyes and recently released a new single titled “Hundreds of Ways” with a surprisingly upbeat message and backup vocals being provided by First Aid Kit. To celebrate Oberst’s day of birth, we choose the song that he wrote to himself placed on Noise Floor, “Happy Birthday To Me (Feb. 15)”.

All eyes on the calendar
Another year I claim of total indifference
To here, the days pile up
With decisions to be made
I’m sure all of them were wrong

Into this song I send myself
And with these drinks I plan to collapse
And forget this wasted year, these wasted years
Devoted friends, they disappear

And I’m sorry about the phone call and needing you
Some decisions you don’t make
I guess it’s just like breathing and not wanting to
Yeah, there are some things you can’t fake

Well, I guess that it’s typical
To cling to memories you’ll never get back again
And to sort through old photographs
Of a summer long ago
Or a friend that you used to know
And there below his frozen face
You wrote the name and that ancient date
And you can’t believe that he’s really gone
When all that’s left is a f***ing song

And I’m sorry about the phone call and waking you
I know that it is late
But thank you for talking, because I needed to
Some things just can’t wait…

Song-A-Day: February 14

Everyday’s the fourteenth! Happy Valentines Day everybody, in terms of musical history Pavement’s famed record Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain was actually released on February 14, but today we’re going to go with the brilliantly fun “Happy Valentines Day” by the once again active hip-hop duo Outkast.

My name is Cupid Valentino, the modern day Cupid
And I just want to say one thing

Happy Valentine’s Day
Every day the 14th!
I don’t think y’all heard me!
I just want to say Happy Valentine’s Day!
Every day the 14th!
Can y’all dig that?
Now when arrows don’t penetrate, see
Cupid grabs the pistol (Uh, yeah, now, now lookie here!)
And he shoots straight for your heart
And when he won’t miss you!
That’s alright ’cause y’all won’t believe in me anyways
But

Ya won’t believe in me, but you would fancy
leprechauns or groundhogs
No thank you, Easter Bunny!
(There’s all this talk about Santa Claus, but see
love will rule reign supreme)

Happy Valentine’s Day
Every day the 14th! (You got it!)
When Cupid knocks at your door
You can’t ignore me!
There’s no need to run!
So, Happy Valentine’s Day (Hey!)
Every day the 14th!
I may have it all wrong, see
If you know what loves mean, well
Well, somebody tell me!
Cause they just don’t believe in me!

Ya’ won’t believe in me, but you would fancy
leprechauns or groundhogs
No thank you, Easter Bunny!
(There’s so much fuss about Santa Claus, but see
Cupid will not be defeated!)

Happy Valentine’s Day
Every day the 14th!
Now I know your hearts have grown cold
And that bothers me
Now I understand ’cause I use to be a bad boy in my day
I know you’re trying to protect your lil’ feelings
but you can’t run away
Oh oh!

Ya’ won’t believe in me, but you would fancy..
(Hey! Don’t you supposed to be some kind of player or something?)
Bunny!

Well keep on runnin’, player
‘Cause I got my good shoes on
And I got ’em tied up tight
So, you’re going to find out tonight!

Got a sweet lil’ darling back in my corner
Below I know I love her, but act like I don’t want her
Surrounded by the lonely, but yet feel like a loner
Could be an organ donor
The way I give up my heart, but
Never know because ? s***, I never tell her!
Ask me about my feelings I’d holla’ that it’s irrela’
I don’t get myself caught up in the Jello gella’
And puddin’ pops, that others opt to call falling in love, but
For the record, have you ever rode a horse?
Would I like for you to take me to Pluto?
I said, “Of course!”
But if you ain’t a sweety indeedy, I won’t endorse
Hans Solo till I’m hit by the bullet, so may the force
Be with you, and I’ll hit you when better time permits
For now, give me examples of why you’re the s***!
But how am I to know with the profession that I’m in?
And if you do not know me, then how could you be my friend?

Happy Valentine’s, Happy Valentine’s
Happy Valentine’s Day, Happy Valentine’s Day

Song-A-Day: February 13

Yesterday was my birthday, along with Matt Berninger (frontman of The National) and Zach Condon (frontman of Beirut). We’ll share our birthday together on here with this suggested song by our current Rock Director Robby Rojo, and make our Song-A-Day for today “Happy Birthday” by Altered Images.

Happy birthday
Happy birthday
Happy birthday
Happy birthday
Happy birthday
Happy birthday.

Happy
Happy birthday in a hot bath
To those nice
Nice nights.
I remember always
Always I got such a fright.
Seeing them in my dark cupboard with my great big cake.
If they were me
If they were me
And I was you and I was you
If they were me and I was you
Would you have liked a present too.

Happy
Happy birthday in a hot bath

Happy birthday
Happy birthday

Song-A-Day: February 12

February 12 has some pretty notable birthdays on it, both musically with Ray Manzarek of The Doors being born on this day in 1939 and historically with Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin both being born on February 12, 1809. Our Song-A-Day today is going to go to a lesser known band from Pennsylvania named Cheers Elephant and their song “Party on Darwin”.

Hey yo!
Let me wash your windshield.

Spreading new ideas,
Like a Dog that barks at any-any-anyone.
A talking head,
With a voice that sounds like any-any-anyone’s.
It’s a Fish YEAH!
Then a Frog YEAH!
Then a Monkey they will all know.
So I monkey along when I’m singing.

Baa-bu-da-bu-da-bu-da
Baa-bu-da-bu-da-bu da-ah-aaahhh

I feel like,
I’m too perfect lie,
I’m too perfect to cry.
Sometimes I feel like I’m a saviour.
Inimitably,
Tryna slow down the beat.
But things are only getting crazier.
What am I? YEAH!
What are you? YEAH!
What lies ahead of you?
So I monkey along when I’m singing

Baa-bu-da-bu-da-bu-da
Baa-bu-da-bu-da-bu-da-ah-aaahhh
Oh YEAH! Baa-bu-da-bu-da-bu-da
Laa-bu-da-bu-da-bu-da-ah-aaahhh

Oh YEAH! Baa-bu-da-bu-da-bu-da
Laa-bu-da-bu-da-bu-da-ah-ooohhh!

Song-A-Day: February 11

Today is the 40th birthday of popular R&B artist D’Angelo, who’s long-awaited third studio album may finally arrive in 2014 to the delight of his fans. Today’s Song-A-Day goes to a track off his debut Brown Sugar, with the track “Me and Those Dreamin’ Eyes of Mine”.

When I first saw you baby, I wanted to die
Me and those dreaming eyes of mine, started to cry
Then I’d dream, wishing my fantasy, would soon become a reality
Cause every time I see you baby, all I do is sigh
Cause you’re the most precious thing
That my dreaming eyes has ever seen
So I’ll continue to dream
Me and those dreaming eyes of mine

Is it just that you’re the finest little thing
That I ever saw, or is my imagination running too far
Or is it that my eyes are telling me something you could never see
Something like me being with you, or you being with me

Ooh we…baby, you’ve redefined my vision of love it seems
Your love be da cherry in my chocolate covered dreams
So it seems, my oh my,
Me and those dreaming eyes of mine

Oh my goodness, here she comes, switching that ass
I wondered if the men in her past have treated he bad
But if I had the chance, I’d treat her like a Queen
Just like I do in all my dreams
If you only knew how many times that I think of you
I’m quite sure that you would find, I’m going out of my mind
My oh my, me and those dreaming eyes of mine.

Song-A-Day: February 10

It’s been widely reported today that this is the 10th anniversary of The College Dropout being released, but did you know that today is also the 18th anniversary of In The Aeroplane Over the Sea? The latter is my favorite album of all-time, but a 10th anniversary is a special event and with Kanye coming to Albany soon it seems right to toss him the Song-A-Day for today. There’s so many good songs to pick here to represent The College Dropout, an album which showed the genuine and honest side of Kanye alongside the egotistical lyrical wordsmith who I believe is one of the best artists of our generation. Our Song-A-Day for today is a bit of an under-appreciated track Kanye track in my book, featuring GLC and Consequence, here’s “Spaceship”.

I’ve been workin’ this graveshift and I ain’t made s***
I wish I could buy me a spaceship and fly past the sky
I’ve been workin’ this graveshift and I ain’t made s***
I wish I could buy me a spaceship and fly past the sky

Man, man, man
If my manager insults me again I will be assaulting him
After I f*** the manager up then I’m gonna shorten the register up
Let’s go back, back to the Gap
Look at my check, wasn’t no scratch
So if I stole, wasn’t my fault
Yeah I stole, never got caught
They take me to the back and pat me
Askin’ me about some khakis
But let some black people walk in
I bet they show off their token blackie
Oh now they love Kanye, let’s put him all in the front of the store
Saw him on break next to the ‘No Smoking’ sign with a blunt and a Mall’
Takin’ my hits, writin’ my hits
Writin’ my rhymes, playin’ my mind
This f***in’ job can’t help him
So I quit, y’all welcome
Y’all don’t know my struggle
Y’all can’t match my hustle
You can’t catch my hustle
You can’t fathom my love dude
Lock yourself in a room doin’ five beats a day for three summers
That’s a different world like Kree Summers
I deserve to do these numbers
The kid that made that deserves that Maybach
So many records in my basement
I’m just waitin’ on my spaceship

I’ve been workin’ this graveshift and I ain’t made s***
I wish I could buy me a spaceship and fly past the sky
I’ve been workin’ this graveshift and I ain’t made s***
I wish I could buy me a spaceship and fly past the sky

Man, I’m talkin’ way past the sky
Let’s go, yeah
And I didn’t even try to work a job
Represent the mob
At the same time thirsty on the grind
Chi state of mind
Lost my momma, lost my mind
My life, my love, that’s not mine
Why you ain’t signed?
Wasn’t my time
Leave me alone, work for y’all
Half of it’s yours, half of it’s mine
Only one to ball
Never one to fall
Gotta get mine
Gotta take mine
Got a tech nine
Reach my prime
Gotta make these haters respect mine
In the mall ’til 12 when my schedule said nine
Puttin’ them pants on shelves
Waitin’ paitently I ask myself
Where I wanna go, where I wanna be
Life is much more than runnin’ in the streets
Holla at ‘ye, hit me with the beat
Put me on my feet
Sound so sweet
Yes I’m the same ol’ G, same goatee
Stayin’ low key, nope
Holler at God “Man why’d you had to take my folks?”
Hope to see Freddy G., Yusef G
Love my G, Rolly G
Police watch me smoke my weed, count my G’s
Got a lot of people countin’ on me
And I’m just tryin’ to find my peace
Should of finished school like my niece
Then I wouldn’t finally wouldn’t use my piece
Aw man, all this pressure

I’ve been workin’ this graveshift and I ain’t made s***
I wish I could buy me a spaceship and fly past the sky
I’ve been workin’ this graveshift and I ain’t made s***
I wish I could buy me a spaceship and fly past the sky

I remember havin’ to take the dollar cab
Comin’ home real late at night
Standin’ on my feet all damn day
Tryin’ to make this thing right
And havin’ one of my co-workers say “Yo you look just like
This kid I seen in the old Busta Rhymes video the other night”
Well easy come, easy go
How that sayin’ goes
No more broad service, cars, and them TV shows
I all had that snatched from me
And all the faculties all turn their back on me
And didn’t wanna hear a rap from me
So naturally actually had to face things factually
Had to be a catastrophe with the fridgest starin’ back at me
Cuz nothing’s there, nothing’s fair
I don’t wanna ever go back there
So I won’t be takin’ no days off ’til my spaceship takes off

I’ve been workin’ this graveshift and I ain’t made s***
I wish I could buy me a spaceship and fly past the sky
I’ve been workin’ this graveshift and I ain’t made s***
I wish I could buy me a spaceship and fly past the sky

I wanna fly, I wanna fly
I said I want my chariot to pick me up
And take me brother for a ride

Song-A-Day: February 9

Today’s the 10th album anniversary of Franz Ferdinand’s self-titled debut album, the one that won them so many fans with awesomely fun songs to listen to. Today’s Song-A-Day goes to the secondary single on the album, “The Dark of the Matinee”

You take your white finger
Slide the nail under the top and bottom buttons of my blazer
Relax the fraying wool, slacken ties
And I’m not to look at you in the shoe, but the eyes, find the eyes

Find me and follow me through corridors, refectories and files
You must follow me, leave this academic factory
You will find me in the matinee
The dark of the matinee
It’s better in the matinee
The dark of the matinee is mine
Yes it’s mine

I time every journey to bump into you, accidentally
I charm you and tell you of the boys I hate
All the girls I hate
All the words I hate
All the clothes I hate
How I’ll never be anything I hate
You smile, mention something that you like
How you’d have a happy life if you did the things you like

Find me and follow me through corridors, refectories and files
You must follow me, leave this academic factory
You will find me in the matinee
The dark of the matinee
It’s better in the matinee
The dark of the matinee is mine
Yes it’s mine

So I’m on BBC2 now, telling Terry Wogan how I made it and
What I made is unclear, but his deference is and his laughter is
My words and smile are so easy now
Yes, It’s easy now
Yes, It’s easy now

Find me and follow me through corridors, refectories and files
You must follow me, leave this academic factory
You will find me in the matinee
The dark of the matinee
It’s better in the matinee
The dark of the matinee is mine
Yes it’s mine

Song-A-Day: February 8

We’re in Aquarius territory at the moment, my favorite Zodiak sign because it’s my own, though rather than turning this into a Horoscope I’d rather turn it into another accidentally day late Song-A-Day. This one comes off of one of the few electronic albums which really click for me in Boards of Canada’s Music Has the Right to Children. Today’s song is “Aquarius”.
