Song-A-Day: February 15

This is the easiest one done yet, today is the birthday of Conor Oberst, a musician beloved by many in our radio station. Oberst has remained active post-Bright Eyes and recently released a new single titled “Hundreds of Ways” with a surprisingly upbeat message and backup vocals being provided by First Aid Kit. To celebrate Oberst’s day of birth, we choose the song that he wrote to himself placed on Noise Floor, “Happy Birthday To Me (Feb. 15)”.

All eyes on the calendar
Another year I claim of total indifference
To here, the days pile up
With decisions to be made
I’m sure all of them were wrong

Into this song I send myself
And with these drinks I plan to collapse
And forget this wasted year, these wasted years
Devoted friends, they disappear

And I’m sorry about the phone call and needing you
Some decisions you don’t make
I guess it’s just like breathing and not wanting to
Yeah, there are some things you can’t fake

Well, I guess that it’s typical
To cling to memories you’ll never get back again
And to sort through old photographs
Of a summer long ago
Or a friend that you used to know
And there below his frozen face
You wrote the name and that ancient date
And you can’t believe that he’s really gone
When all that’s left is a f***ing song

And I’m sorry about the phone call and waking you
I know that it is late
But thank you for talking, because I needed to
Some things just can’t wait…

Song-A-Day: January 3rd

January 3rd is the birthday of former The War on Drugs member and current solo artist Kurt Vile who released the fantastic album Wakin’ On A Pretty Daze last year. Here’s the semi-title track off of that album “Wakin on a Pretty Day”, and here’s to hoping you all get to experience something nearly as calming as this song you start your collective day.

Wakin’ in the dawn of day
I gotta think about what i wanna say
Phone ringin off the shelf
I guess he wanted to kill himself
Wakin on a pretty day
Don’t know why i ever go away
It’s hard to explain
My love in this daze

You can say i’ve been most all around
But honey i ain’t goin nowhere
Don’t worry bout a thing
It’s only dying
I love along a straight line
Nothin always comes to mind
To be frank, im fried
But i don’t mind

Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah yeah

Been diggin
Layin low, low, low
I’m diggin
Layin low, low, low
Dig, dig in
To these lives that we are livin
Livin low
Lackadaisically so

Risin at the crack of dawn
I gotta think about what wisecrack
I’m gonna drop along the way today
Phone ringin off the shelf
I guess somebody got somethin they
Really wanna prove to us today

Wakin on a pretty day
For any place
No use sayin nothin
To explain it
To my loved ones today

90.9 fm — anything but ephemeral

Just a few days ago, CDB turned 32! In 1978 we hit the ground running, appropriately christening the airwaves by spinning “born to run” by The Boss. But you won’t hear that song on CDB anymore because we don’t play mainstream music—that’s our whole M.O.. Just to give you an idea of how long we’ve been doing this, we’ve been at it since:

-before your parents met

-the president was in high school in Hawaii

-Deer hunter (the movie) came out (as well as lord of the rings, inglorious bastards, superman, and halloween)

-a gallon of gas was 63 cents

-the Democratic president was carried to the White House by the South (Carter)

…point being: it’s been a while, we’re still going strong, and we’re not stopping anytime soon. Check out the history of CDB on www.wcdbfm.com
