Lorde’s “Royals” Takes Over Record Breaking Title

A New Queen Takes the Throne

Billboard announced that Lorde has taken the record for the longest domination by a female artist on the Alternative Songs chart with her breakthrough hit “Royals”–surpassing Alanis Morissette’s 18 year reign with her classic 90s anthem “You Oughta Know.”

The 16-year-old New Zeland singer/songwriter, Ella Yelich-O’Connor, has maintained the record-breaking number one spot for six weeks with her catchy Electropop tune. This has been the first time a solo female artist has even touched the tip of the chart since Tracy Bonham’s “Mother Mother” in 1996, now holding third place for the overall record.

WCDB began playing “Royals” in early spring and even though the Top 40 hit can no longer meet our airwaves, such a young artist’s accomplishment in the Alternative music scene should still be greatly acknowledged. Listeners can still expect to hear some of Lord’es other talented work as the anticipation for her debut album, Pure Heroine, continues to rise–released on September 27.

If you’re a fan of the hit here’s another track from Lorde, titled “Tennis Court.”
