  1. At the time of writing this, the video has had 2.5 million hits. Which is a huge amount of views. But because of that can it really be called “alternative”? Obviously not, this song is popular enough to the point where it is clearly something that is quite mainstream. And furthermore, this is probably the most popular song of the past week.(so why do we have this song on our site?)

But the most serious problem is this mainstream song is not on the Billboard charts, essentially because it cannot be played on a clear channel radio station. This brings up a number of problems. Mainly, does this mean that the billboard charts do not accurately reflect what is popular or mainstream? This seems to be the case in regards to this song.

Finally this causes a problem for us at wcdb because in the past we have used the billboard charts as a way to stay alternative. If something makes it to the top 40 of the hot 100 chart we don’t play it so that we can stay different and fresh, and so we are not playing the same tired songs as everyone else. But since there is clearly flaws in using this method does that mean we have to abandon this as a measure of our alternative-ness? Or does that mean we could have not been alternative for some time and not even realized it?

As a note to the listeners: maybe we are not as alternative we do think, but we do worry about these problems, and we are always striving to find new interesting things for you to listen to that are not played on other radio station- which is definitely a plus for our station, and something you can not get anywhere else.
