Song-A-Day: February 10

It’s been widely reported today that this is the 10th anniversary of The College Dropout being released, but did you know that today is also the 18th anniversary of In The Aeroplane Over the Sea? The latter is my favorite album of all-time, but a 10th anniversary is a special event and with Kanye coming to Albany soon it seems right to toss him the Song-A-Day for today. There’s so many good songs to pick here to represent The College Dropout, an album which showed the genuine and honest side of Kanye alongside the egotistical lyrical wordsmith who I believe is one of the best artists of our generation. Our Song-A-Day for today is a bit of an under-appreciated track Kanye track in my book, featuring GLC and Consequence, here’s “Spaceship”.

I’ve been workin’ this graveshift and I ain’t made s***
I wish I could buy me a spaceship and fly past the sky
I’ve been workin’ this graveshift and I ain’t made s***
I wish I could buy me a spaceship and fly past the sky

Man, man, man
If my manager insults me again I will be assaulting him
After I f*** the manager up then I’m gonna shorten the register up
Let’s go back, back to the Gap
Look at my check, wasn’t no scratch
So if I stole, wasn’t my fault
Yeah I stole, never got caught
They take me to the back and pat me
Askin’ me about some khakis
But let some black people walk in
I bet they show off their token blackie
Oh now they love Kanye, let’s put him all in the front of the store
Saw him on break next to the ‘No Smoking’ sign with a blunt and a Mall’
Takin’ my hits, writin’ my hits
Writin’ my rhymes, playin’ my mind
This f***in’ job can’t help him
So I quit, y’all welcome
Y’all don’t know my struggle
Y’all can’t match my hustle
You can’t catch my hustle
You can’t fathom my love dude
Lock yourself in a room doin’ five beats a day for three summers
That’s a different world like Kree Summers
I deserve to do these numbers
The kid that made that deserves that Maybach
So many records in my basement
I’m just waitin’ on my spaceship

I’ve been workin’ this graveshift and I ain’t made s***
I wish I could buy me a spaceship and fly past the sky
I’ve been workin’ this graveshift and I ain’t made s***
I wish I could buy me a spaceship and fly past the sky

Man, I’m talkin’ way past the sky
Let’s go, yeah
And I didn’t even try to work a job
Represent the mob
At the same time thirsty on the grind
Chi state of mind
Lost my momma, lost my mind
My life, my love, that’s not mine
Why you ain’t signed?
Wasn’t my time
Leave me alone, work for y’all
Half of it’s yours, half of it’s mine
Only one to ball
Never one to fall
Gotta get mine
Gotta take mine
Got a tech nine
Reach my prime
Gotta make these haters respect mine
In the mall ’til 12 when my schedule said nine
Puttin’ them pants on shelves
Waitin’ paitently I ask myself
Where I wanna go, where I wanna be
Life is much more than runnin’ in the streets
Holla at ‘ye, hit me with the beat
Put me on my feet
Sound so sweet
Yes I’m the same ol’ G, same goatee
Stayin’ low key, nope
Holler at God “Man why’d you had to take my folks?”
Hope to see Freddy G., Yusef G
Love my G, Rolly G
Police watch me smoke my weed, count my G’s
Got a lot of people countin’ on me
And I’m just tryin’ to find my peace
Should of finished school like my niece
Then I wouldn’t finally wouldn’t use my piece
Aw man, all this pressure

I’ve been workin’ this graveshift and I ain’t made s***
I wish I could buy me a spaceship and fly past the sky
I’ve been workin’ this graveshift and I ain’t made s***
I wish I could buy me a spaceship and fly past the sky

I remember havin’ to take the dollar cab
Comin’ home real late at night
Standin’ on my feet all damn day
Tryin’ to make this thing right
And havin’ one of my co-workers say “Yo you look just like
This kid I seen in the old Busta Rhymes video the other night”
Well easy come, easy go
How that sayin’ goes
No more broad service, cars, and them TV shows
I all had that snatched from me
And all the faculties all turn their back on me
And didn’t wanna hear a rap from me
So naturally actually had to face things factually
Had to be a catastrophe with the fridgest starin’ back at me
Cuz nothing’s there, nothing’s fair
I don’t wanna ever go back there
So I won’t be takin’ no days off ’til my spaceship takes off

I’ve been workin’ this graveshift and I ain’t made s***
I wish I could buy me a spaceship and fly past the sky
I’ve been workin’ this graveshift and I ain’t made s***
I wish I could buy me a spaceship and fly past the sky

I wanna fly, I wanna fly
I said I want my chariot to pick me up
And take me brother for a ride

Song-A-Day: February 5

It’s snowing in Albany once again, causing the University to cancel classes and allowing many a break from their work week. Today’s Song-A-Day goes to Nada Surf with their song “Blizzard of ’77”, where “the cars were just lumps on the snow”.

In the blizzard of ’77
The cars were just lumps on the snow
And then later trippin at 7-11
The shelves were stretching out of control
On a plane ride
The more it shakes, the more I have to let go
And the signal’s still getting all mixed up
We’re always doing damage control

But in the middle of the night I worry
Its blurry even without light
In the middle of the night I worry
Its blurry even without light

I miss you more than I knew

I know I have got a negative edge
That’s why I sharpen all the others a lot
Its like flowers or ladybugs
Pretty weeds or red beetles with dots

But in the middle of the night I worry
Its blurry even without light
In the middle of the night I worry
Its blurry even without light

I miss you more than I knew
I miss you more than I knew
I miss you more than I knew

Most Viewed Year in Airwaves’ History

Picture 3

Our blog is still eyeing progression, but one of the primary goals of the year has just been accomplished. 2013 is officially the most viewed year that Airwaves, WCDB Albany’s official blog, has ever had, and we haven’t even entered December yet! Stay tuned in the upcoming months in order to see

  • The finale of Kyle’s Favorite 100 songs countdown. Expected Arrival: Sunday
  • The End-of-the-Year lists our DJs come up with. Expected Arrival: Early-Mid December
  • WCDB’s congregate Album of the Year list. Expected Arrival: Late December
  • A special, and eagerly awaited ‘Top 100 Alternative Songs’ from a more historical perspective, provided by my dad Thomas Ryan (author of American Hit Radio and host of radio show “American Hit Network”). Expected Arrival: January

There will also likely be the addition of more ‘Essential Albums’ posts under different parameters, more DJ surveys, more album reviews, and possibly a new segment to cover artist’s discographies from album to album. Thank you to all the readers for helping make this our best year so far, we’ll continue working hard to improve our product.

((SHOW REVIEW)) THE BABIES, Party Boat, & Birthdays at Valentine’s 5/3/13

It was one of the first days of spring — white flowers were blooming hard all over Albany and people were driving by with open windows spilling music on to the streets. At the time of this writing, Albany Medical Center has not taken over this block where Valentine’s stands and hopefully if you are reading this in the future, it has not done so!

Image

It is Friday night, May 3rd, with locals Birthdays and Party Boat opening for THE BABIES. We were all really excited to see The Babies play live – A lot of the rock DJs have played the hell out of Our House on the Hill since it was released in November 2012. One concert-goer proclaimed, “MY HEART IS A JITTERY BUTTERFLY” while we waited for them to start and I forced a “Kodak Moment”:

Image

THE BABIES – I had so much fun during their set – They had lots of energy and played all the hits! Their live show translated well from their studio albums — Seeing them live made me love their songs even more because the instruments sounded bolder all around and it really did it for me. I hope one day I can see them play a basement show. There were a lot of dancers in the audience which made the set even more fun.

They had Our House on the Hill on record, cassette, and CD, their self titled CD, Moonlight Mile/Places 7” (review below), T-Shirt, and an AWESOME TOTE BAG (A++++++)

Live Show: See You Next Year, The Fallen Starlets, Nine Votes Short, and ExoVox Review

Valentine’s of Albany is known for hosting local bands and putting on shows that make people proud to live in the area. Well, folks, this show didn’t disappoint. The line up consisted of See You Next Year (SYNY), The Fallen Starlet, Nine Votes Shorts, and ExoVox.

The show kicked off with local band SYNY, a pop punk band with the job of getting the crowd pumped up for the rest of the show. Instrumentally, these guys brought the energy. Continue reading Live Show: See You Next Year, The Fallen Starlets, Nine Votes Short, and ExoVox Review

Bounty in My UAlbany Webmail Account? or: WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE

Have you seen the graffiti on the academic podium?

Pretty funny, although I do empathize with the groundskeepers who had to scrub all of them off. But while this act of uppity college terrorism is pretty humorous, c’mon… priorities, guys. Now I’ve kept quiet mostly on what I think of Fountain Day’s cancellation but allow me to just say, if I REALLY want to stand ankle deep in pisswater and drink I will still stand ankle deep in pisswater and drink. That will pretty much define my upcoming summer. So, this brings me to the e-mail I am currently looking at. If you’re a student at U of A (or technically “of U at A”) then you most likely have this same information in your inbox right now from the fine folks at the University Police Department:

UPD is committed to the identification, arrest and prosecution of those responsible. A $1000 reward is being offered to anyone with information leading to the arrest and conviction of the persons responsible.

A $1,000 reward. If you’re a broke college student who suffers from as much unemployment as I do, you know this is a big deal. But more importantly, if you grew up idolizing the right people like I did, then you know that this is an oppurtunity to be a real life BOUNTY HUNTER.

So… Cool…

So sit back and read how I captured the Graffiti Bandit!
